Spartanburg District 5 school board member dies, officials say

Schools in District Five of Spartanburg announced that Jeff Proper, a member of its board of directors, died Tuesday, according to Melissa Robinette, along with schools in District Five of Spartanburg in Spartanburg County. Proper was first elected to the board in November 2015, Robinette said. According to Robinette, he faithfully served the students and schools of District Five, seeing the district go through times of great change and growth, while remaining a strong advocate for teachers and student success. “Jeff Proper was an incredible champion of Spartanburg District Five Schools, and believed in our mission of every child, every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary. “He leaves a void on our board and in our hearts we won’t be able to fill. He was also a board member of the RD Anderson Applied Technology Center, Robinette said. According to Robinette, he was also a dedicated trainer and volunteer for the District Five Sports Activity Council, where he served in various roles for over a decade. “Our hearts are broken at the news of this loss,” said District Five Board Chair Julie McMakin. “Jeff was a strong supporter of the schools in the district five, and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers go out to his wife, children and family. “Proper leaves behind a wife and two children.

Schools in District Five of Spartanburg announced the death of its board member Jeff Proper on Tuesday, according to Melissa Robinette, along with schools in District Five of Spartanburg in Spartanburg County.

Proper was first elected to the board in November 2015, Robinette said.

According to Robinette, he faithfully served the students and schools of District Five, seeing the district go through times of great change and growth, while remaining a strong advocate for teachers and student success.

“Jeff Proper was an incredible champion for the schools in District Five of Spartanburg and believed in our mission of every child, every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary. “He leaves a void on our board, and in our hearts, that we cannot fill.”

During his tenure on the District Five Board of Directors, Proper served on curriculum and teaching, as well as the finance committee. He was also a board member of the RD Anderson Applied Technology Center, Robinette said.

According to Robinette, he was also a dedicated coach and volunteer for the District Five Sports Council, where he held various roles for over a decade.

“Our hearts are broken at the news of this loss,” said District Five Board Chair Julie McMakin. “Jeff was a huge supporter of the District Five schools, and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with his wife, children and family.

Proper leaves behind a wife and two children.
